Working Mom

Today is my first day back at work. It wasn't too hard to come back today since Kailey is at home with Rob and I am going home at lunchtime to see how my peanut is doing. Right now I hate not being home to catch some of my daytime talk shows more than anything!

Tomorrow it will hit me though. Kailey has her first day at the sitters house. I interviewed 2 places and loved both of them. The first one is in my neighborhood. The lady there does newsletters, class pictures, projects, pizza parties, holiday parties, etc. It was great but Kailey wont be benefiting from any of that for awhile. This lady also had a lot of toddlers and would also have another infant. I just wasnt sure if Kailey would get the attention a newborn should be receiving.

The second lady that I interviewed is actually my friend's doula. She lives right next to where I work. I went to see her and loved her. She has a 4 month old boy and then 1-2 days a week she watches a little girl who is 16 months old. It was a perfect fit. She will be going to daycare there Tuesday - Thursday. Mondays my mother-in-law will watch her and on Fridays my mom will watch her.

Rob is still off so I will probably only use the daycare 2 days a week but I figured not only do I have to get into a routine of taking her in the morning, she needs to too.

On a positive note, we are going on 3 nights of sleeping through the night. Kailey's been going down to sleep at 10:30pm and waking up anywhere from 6-7am.

Sleep

Kailey slept through the night. Praise the Lord! I put her down at 10:30pm and about 10:45pm she started to fuss a bit. Her binky fell out so Rob shoved it back in. Next thing I know its 6:15am. I changed her diaper, fed her, we played a bit and then she fell asleep again until 10:30am.

It was probably a one night deal but I am still excited about it.

1 Month Doctor Appointment

Kailey had her 1 month doctors appointment today and it went really well. The doctor answered a few questions that I had and then we went over her height and weight. She is now 9lbs 5oz and 21 3/4 inches long. Her head size went from 34cm at birth to 38cm. Her weight is at the 50th percentile and her head and height are at the 75th percentile.

She is her father's daughter for sure!

Bad Night/Good Night

Last night after Kailey's 8pm feeding, she went started crying like I have never seen her cry before. I checked her diaper and it was good, she had just eaten, I laid her on her belly, on her back, walked with her while cradling her, over my shoulder, sat in the rocking chair, sat on the couch - nothing worked. She usually poops after eating and I am pretty sure her belly was just bothering her. I did get her to poop a tiny bit, but not much. After 2 hours of this crying, she finally fell asleep. She woke up about 12:30am ready to eat. As soon as she was done, I put her down to sleep and the next thing I know, Rob is asking me if she is ok. It was 8:30am! Woo hoo! She slept the whole night. She didnt wake up till 9am! Now if we could get her to sleep a little earlier like a 9pm-5am schedule... that would be beautiful!

Home Alone

Kailey had her first sleepover last night and left us for a night to ourselves. I dropped Kailey off at Grandma's and then Rob and I went to finally enjoy our Valentines Day dinner at Olive Garden. For Christmas, Casey and Maura gave us a gift card for dinner and a movie and it was the perfect time to cash them in!

We get to Olive Garden and just start our meal when some kid starts crying and screaming. So much for a night without hearing that! Dinner was fabulous and so was my daiquiri!

We stopped at Hollywood Video on the way home and rented Gone Baby Gone. Well that pretty much describes me... I was out 45 minutes into the movie.

Rob had stocked up the fridge for with a few beers and we were ready to have ourselves a little party. A half a beer into it - I was out. I tried so hard to stay awake and I just couldnt do it.

I ended up sleeping 11 hours!

Today we are going to do a few errands, pick up formula at Sams Club, buy birthday presents at Target and go see a matinee of Jumper. Just a day for us...

Enough with the poop!

Kailey is a pooping machine. Pooping so much that I called the doctors today. I thought she had diarrhea and was concerned cause she is going so often. The doctor said to come in for a weight check.

Since Kailey has been pooping so much and we were wiping her so much, the poor thing has a horrible diaper rash. Rob went to my grandmas to help with some plumbing issue so my mom came over at her lunch hour to help me clean her up. We have been putting Kailey over the sink and just running warm water over her little butt and its kinda of been a 2 man job.

Since mom was already over, I invited her to the doctors with me. I brought a dirty diaper to show the doctor and she actually said what Kailey was doing was normal. It's so hard to believe since her poop is just so watery. She also weighed her and she was 8lbs 6oz! She gained almost a pound in 3 days! I mentioned to the doctor that she slept all day yesterday and she said she probably was having a growth spurt.

So everything is all good. Hopefully I will keep Kailey out of the doctors office this upcoming week. She has now been there 5 times in 3 weeks.

My life at the changing table

I know its been awhile since I have written any updates but we have been pretty busy over here.

Kailey went for another doctors appointment on Monday. This was her 4th visit in 2 weeks. She finally is putting on weight and is at 7lbs 12oz. Her umbilical cord is now all gone and her belly button is finally starting to go down. (In case I never said before, she had a herniated belly button and it was huge!)

We are however having a lot of problems in the poop department. For about a week we had stopped pooping. We did the suppositories and the only time those worked is when she pushed them out of her little butt.

When we went to the doctors last week, they suggested adding dark Karo syrup to her bottle. Well for 2 days that did nothing. Then one day we had 1 poopie diaper, the next day we had 2 poopie diapers, the following day my kid pooped more than any adult might in a week. Since last friday she has pooped at each diaper change and even while you are changing her, she poops again. From 12am till 1:30pm yesterday, we had 6 poop diapers. My daughters butt is as red as can be and it hurts us to even wipe her down.

The doctor suggested starting her on soy formula and see how she does with that for a week. Of course I had JUST purchased a huge tub of her formula and made 1 stinking bottle. But thats ok, we are going to hold on to it and the rest of our samples in case we have to go back to it. The doctors office was also all out of the soy samples too.

So today I went to Walmart and got a small can of the soy. Hopefully this helps. I also thought I purchased the last of the newborn diapers on Saturday. A 40 pack - gone in 2.5 days. Yes we are changing her that much!

So if I havent returned any calls, replied to any emails, or even answered the phone, it is because I am spending most of my time at the changing table wiping my daughters butt. Poor thing : (

First Outings

With the few nice days we have had, we decided to get us and Kailey out of the house. We went on our First outing to Target on Monday. Kailey slept through the whole thing but that is probably a good thing. We ran into Walgreens and then stopped by my old work and grandma's office to show off peanut.

Today grandma and I took Kailey to Kohls and the mall. As soon as I unzipped her Bundle Me, we saw that she spit up. She has done this once at the doctors office as the doctor pushed on her belly and then chose now for her 2nd time. Her little outfit was so wet so we bought and I love daddy Valentines onesie to match her pants. After we were all cleaned up we went over to the mall. That was so much fun! She slept through the whole thing but it was so fun to be one of the moms at the mall now. It was the first time I had used the stroller too - funny the things that amuse me now. I am sure we will have so many more trips but these first few were so fun!

Sleep

We are actually doing really good in the sleep department. I know I am probably jinxing myself by writing this but I am so proud of her. Last night we did a diaper change at 12:30am and she went down not long after that and woke up at 5:30am. The night before we did a diaper change at 2am and then she woke up at 6:30am. Way to go Kailey! Mommy and Daddy are actually getting some sleep!!!

Cords and Butt Pills

Yesterday I was changing Kailey and noticed her umbilical cord fell off. What was left behind didnt look too good. We took her to the doctor and they put some medicine in to clean it up and dry up the left over fluid. It was something that was very normal. Poor thing!

We also have not pooped now for almost 3 days. The doctor told us to get a suppository. Robs face was priceless when he realized that we need to stick something up her butt. He said he didnt want to give her butt pills.

I held her feet, he started to insert. She started to push. Her little nose was flared and turning white she was pushing so hard. She pushed that thing right out and pooped a little each time Rob tried shoving it back in. After being unsuccessful for so long, we gave up so her little butt could rest. We did get some poop out but not enough. Looks like we are trying again this morning.

The First Night Home

Wow. I miss the nurses and sending Kailey to the nursery. We got home with Kailey and kinda didnt know what to do with her. We took some pictures, sat and looked at her. We fed her, changed her diaper and then realized it was bedtime - for us. Kailey had other plans. This peanut never cried in the hospital. She saved it for home. I took the first shift from 11pm-2am. For the first 2 hours she wasnt too bad. Then 1am kicked in and all hell broke loose. Finally at 2am I woke Rob up and said "Your Turn!" We tried burping her, we tried holding her in this position, in that position, standing up, sitting down, she was in her crib, she was out of the crib. What in the world is wrong? Rob was going on and on about how the nurses lied about how good she was in the hospital. I went to sleep till about 3am. I could hear her and I could sense Robs frustration. I also heard him say he was about to feed Kailey to Rufus so I took her so he could sleep and I just laid her on my chest in bed. She feel asleep from 3:30-5:30am just like that. I put her in her crib and she slept till 11am. Woo Hoo!

We looked like hell though. I never saw either of us look so tired. We took advantage and slept while she did. This tougher than we thought.

Poop

Who knew you could be so obsessed with poop? I know that some people warned me about this and said this will be all that we talk about but I just didnt think I would talk about it as much as them. Well needless to say, we are keeping a Feeding and Poop journal. We record everytime we feed her and how much she ate. We also record the time she has pooped and peed.

It sounds crazy but we cant remember the last 10 minutes much less was it 3 or 4 hours since Kailey has eaten.

So for all of you who said I would become obsessed with poop.... you were right. Poop is now my life.

Our First Doctors Appointment

We had our first outting on Monday to the doctors. Of course I was scooping out the other babies and Kailey was the cutest baby in the waiting room.

The nurse weighed her at 7lbs, 3 oz and her head measured in at 35.5cm.

All my silly questions were answered like when can we start using baby lotion? Why does she snort so much? Can she be in the swing too long? Why hasnt she pooped in over 24 hours?

She is very healthy and the doctor needs to see her again in a week to see if she is up to her birth weight. Then we go when she is a month old. She wasn't too happy to be there so hopefully we stay as healthy as we are and avoid the doctors office!

Whose Body Is This?

I thought the last week of my pregnancy was uncomfortable. Yeah right. How come no one told me about what I would feel like after I have birth?!?!? My legs are so swollen that I dont know where my thighs begins and my ankles end. My stitches... oh god! And my boobs! Are you kidding me?!?! No one told me it would feel like I got implants of concrete. This is just insane! I'm told that it will be all going away soon. In the meantime I just sit here and wait and wait and wait....

My Labor

I have been slacking in the blogging department so I am finally taking some time to catch up today. I figured someday I am going to print these all out and save them for Kailey's memory book so I better get back to writing.

Thursday, January 17th

Rob and I got up, showered and took our last pregnancy picture. Of course before we left we had a hug and I just started crying. This was it. We were starting our family and in a selfish way, this was the last time it was just Rob and me. Were we ready for this? So many emotions were going through me. After I wiped up my tears, we were on our way to the hospital.

It was so cold out! There was no valet guy around and there was no parking in the Birthing Suites parking. We drove over to the Visitor Parking and hiked our way over with our bags.

When we arrived at 6am they told us they were expecting us at 7am and it would be an hour till we saw a nurse. We did get into our Suite although it wasn't one of the large ones with all the windows. The nurse said they were packed. How many women could really be there? (Later we found out that we were the 15th birth that day!) Rob went to grab breakfast in the cafe while I changed into my stylish gown.

Our nurse Jackie got me all hooked up to IV's and monitors. Doctor Mauoro came in at 7:30am to break my water since I was still at 1.5cm. All of a sudden there was this trickle of water that I was sitting in. Ew. Then I coughed and had a gush. Ew ew. Then I laughed and more came out. Ew ew ew. This went on for hours. The nurse had to keep changing the pad that was under me.

I thought I was going to be able to get up and walk around. I heard that is great for labor. I happened to look under the sheet and it looked like I had a wire coming out of me. I called Rob over and asked him to look. Sure enough there was something stuck "up there." The way Dr. Mauoro breaks the bag of water is by using the internal monitor. It was a little screw at the end of it that goes into the babies head. So now I was left to the bed and could get up to wipe off all the fluid. Then it hit me. I cant go to the bathroom either. Well at least get up and go.

At 8:40am the Pitocin was started into my IV to start the contractions. By 9:25am I asked Jackie if I was having a contraction. Something was feeling crampy. She said I was and that I had a few before that.

By 10:30am my contractions were consistently 2 minutes apart. They were uncomfortable but I could tolerate them. I didn't want to seem like a big baby and get the epidural now. The nurse said whenever I was ready, she would make the call.

By 11:20am I finally gave in to having to go to the bathroom. My first experience with a bed pan. And wouldn't be my last that day.

My mom stopped by around lunch time since Rob was going to meet his dad for some coffee in the lobby. The contractions were more uncomfortable and I was now grabbing the side of the bed at each one. I also started to get sick with each one and ended up vomiting 3 or 4 times. When Rob came back I told Jackie to get someone up here now. I am done with this pain! That was at 12:30pm

Mom left just in time. My contractions were so bad that I was crying and thought I would just rather die. The anesthesiologist didn't get there till 1pm. If I would have known it was going to take so long I would have asked earlier. Rob was trying to calm my down and rub my head but I was so hot and just the touch of someone made me want to scream. The poor guy!

I swing around to the side of the bed and I am spinning. I have never been so dizzy in my entire life. The doctor is in there and I am trying to tell him to wait before he sticks me cause I was having a contraction. I am sweating like I have never sweated against Rob. I don't know what I would have done without him. The epidural hurt so bad. And to have the contractions coming on top of it... Shoot me now please! The medicine started to work but only on my left side. Just flipping great. He gave me more and had me lay on my right side for it to drain. In the meantime, my pressure drops alot. It was 75 over something. My right hand was turning a weird color and I couldn't move my fingers. The nurse got me to call down and it finally went up to 90 something. The Pitocin eventually kicked in on my right side and I could feel just enough pain to know that a contraction was coming. The anesthesiologist finally left at 1:45pm.

At 2pm Jackie checked me and had another nurse Rosemary double check me. I was fully dilated and ready to push! That was quick! Kailey's head was so far down now. Apparently I had almost gotten to the point of not being able to get the epidural and gave birth to her naturally. The nurses started to prep the room and at 3pm I was ready to push.

Rob had one leg, the nurse had another. I was pushing and pushing. It felt like her head had to be half way out. At each contraction, my legs went up and the counting to 10 started. We did 2-3 sets each time. Rob did most of my counting and had to be the best coach ever.

The nurses said they could see her head and it looked like she had dark hair. They used some kind of bottle and shampoo to clean her head and said she actually had red hair!

After 45 minutes of pushing, Dr. Mauoro said that we had 3 options. 1 - use the suction cup, 2 - the forceps and the last case scenario - a C-section although she was right there and he really didn't want to do that.

So the suction cup comes out and I am pushing. Apparently she was too far along and the cup just wasn't sticking. Dr. started to stretch me - that felt fabulous, and got out the forceps. Then I heard that awful work - episiotomy. Even with him doing that, I still ended up tearing and had a 3rd degree tear.

After a few good pushes though, I felt her slide on out. But she wasn't crying. Doctor gave her a few good shakes and they nurses took her over to the warmer and she let out a few good cries. Doctor said she had just been through a lot and was tired. Her heart rate was dropping when I was pushing so that was the need to get her out so soon. I didn't find out till the next day that the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck twice.

There she was, starring at me. Rob was over there taking her all in and taking pictures. Red hair, long fingers, big feet and long toes. And she was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. One of the nurses opened the door so I could hear the music playing for Kailey's birth and I just started crying.

We had to wait for my local so he could stitch me up. Well I took that really well and couldn't feel anything from my waist down. I sat and concentrated on moving my left leg and nothing. It was insane. The doctor and Rob had to lift me up cause I was sliding down the bed and couldn't do it myself. I got my 20 stitches. The nurses cleaned me up and my daughter was placed in my arms. I was so proud of Rob, of myself and I couldn't have been happier.

I'm Here!

Hi everyone,

I thought I would give everyone an update about me. I was born on Jan. 17th at 4:03pm weighing 7lbs, 9 oz. and am 20.5 inches long. Mommy was only in labor for 8.5 hours! I have light red hair like my daddy did when he was born and I have really long pretty fingers and big huge feet (like daddy too!). Some people have said that I have mom's nose, but I don't really see it. For some reason I don't have much of a chin, but I am hoping that it will show up soon.

I was a really good girl at the hospital and hardly ever cried. I started out only drinking about a 1/2 oz of formula but now I finish my whole 2 oz bottle! Being this cute works up an appetite! I am pooping with the big boys, no problems in that area! Mommy and daddy have gotten the whole feeding me and changing me thing down pretty good.

While I was in the hospital these 2 ladies thought I was so cute that they did a photo shoot of me! They must think I am the next Gerber baby. Mommy said that all the babies get their pictures taken but I think she was lying to me. You can see my pretty pictures online. Just go to:
www.bellababyphotography.com There is a spot to click on either website or blog, just click on the website. Next click on client and the password to see me is: 0117kaileyanne

I'm kinda embarrassed. The lady taking my picture caught me picking my nose in one of the pictures and mommy says on the very last picture I am making a "Kailey face." Whatever that means....

We are home now and I have never seen mommy and daddy look so tired. I have pooped so much since I have been home and saved up my crying till we got here. I didn't want all the other babies to see me cry at the hospital.

We are doing good and if anyone would like to visit, we love visitors! Just please call me first. I am a very important baby and want to make sure I have time to spend with all of you.

See you soon!

Love,
Kailey Anne Annis

Baby Update

So here is the scoop:

I am finally dilated to 1.5! Woo hoo! But since Kailey's due date was yesterday and there is still no sign of her, the doctor is going to induce on Thursday. Rob and I have to be at the hospital at 5:30am and they should have me all set to go by 6am. So either Thursday night or Friday Kailey will finally make her grand entrance. That is unless she comes on her own before Thursday morning. We will probably make some phone calls and send out a few text messages when she arrives and I am sure friends and family will be passing along the message.

Crib time

At least someone enjoys the crib!

Dear Kailey

Dear Kailey,

Today is January 14th and apparently you didn't get the memo that you are supposed to be joining the world today. It's 1:30pm and there are no signs indicating that you will be making an appearance today.

Something you dont know about your mom is that she is always on time and most of the time even early. I am not used to having to wait like this. Your dad on the other hand... please dont be like your dad. He has no concept of time and I am getting really worried that you are taking after him already.

We are ready for you. Your room is ready, your clothes are washed, your bags are packed, your car seat is in and all your toys are put together and ready to go.

We're waiting on you!!!

Love your very impatience mommy

My Membranes Have Been Stripped

This weeks appointment was a little painful. First of all, Kailey is a sleeper in the afternoon. Right when I was put on the monitor she had a few movements and then zonked out. Dr. Fitzgibbon came in and tried to wake her up by putting a vibrating massager on my belly. She gave a few kicks although I couldn't feel or see them. She then checked to see if I have dilated. Nope. But as she was checking me, she got Kailey's heartbeat up when she poked her in the head.

Dr told me she was going to strip my membranes. I had no clue what she was talking about and my look have must have said it. She explained the process. Here is what the Internet says so I don't screw it up....

As you probably know, the bag of waters is inside the uterus, and the bag is composed of membranes. The membranes tend to cling to the wall of the uterus until after the baby is born and the placenta is expelled. As the cervix begins to soften and open (dilate) at the end of pregnancy, the part of the membranes that was over the cervical opening can be felt through the opening when a vaginal exam is done. "Stripping the membranes" is done by inserting a finger between the membranes and the wall of the uterus to loosen the membranes from the wall. Sometimes, this stimulation of the uterine wall can help to start labor. Sometimes, the loosening of the membranes allows more water to collect in front of the baby which puts more pressure on the cervix and perhaps labor is stimulated that way. The procedure can be a little uncomfortable for some women. If the woman is truly near delivery, she often gets a contraction as a result of the procedure.

It hurt like hell! She said I will probably experience some bleeding and cramping and hopefully that cramping continues on. She also said that if I don't deliver by my due date then between Week 40-41 they would induce me.

She estimates that I am having a 7.5-8 pound baby from how I am measuring although she said you never really know. I will probably be closer to the 8lbs side if I go to next week.

So hold tight everyone - we may have a baby this week (or tomorrow!!)

Week 39

I thought I would update everyone with a picture of me at Week 39. My favorite part of this picture is that my undies are hanging out : )

I swear when I look in the mirror my face isnt as fat as it is in these last few weeks of pictures!

We're all good

Everything is fine. We got to the ER and there was no one in there. I have never seen it so quiet. We got registered and were in a room and saw the doctor right away. He ordered an EKG, blood work and a chest x-ray. We decided to pass on the x-ray. It just didn't seem necessary and with being pregnant I didn't feel so comfortable. The doctor had listened to my lungs and heart and things seemed ok. We waited for the results and of course everything was normal. The doctor said my uterus is probably just pushing my my diaphragm which caused me to be short of breath. That's what I figured but with being due in only a few days, it really wasn't worth it to taken a chance.

He told me to go home and just rest for the remainder of the day and that is just what I did. I cam home and slept and feeling much better. I just need to learn to take it easy.

Short of breath

Well I have 10 more days. Can you believe it? This week I was a little short of breath but about after 30 minutes of being at work today I couldnt get enough air. About 30 minutes later I called the nurse and left a message for her. I am feeling a bit better but still just not feeling normal. The nurse called and said the doctor might want me over at the ER just to get checked out with being so close to the due date. She is calling me back so I am just waiting.

More than likely Kailey is just getting big and she is squishing all kinds of things inside me not leaving much room for my lungs to get a nice deep breath. I would rather get checked out though just to be safe.

Nurse called... on my way to ER to get checked out.

If walking speeds up the process

I could have this baby tonight! We had Transfer Orientation today at work and I hardly got a chance to rest my feet all day. I don't know how I had the energy but now that I am home... it's time for a foot rub and bed! I am exhausted.

I really just hate waiting. I am tired of giving everyone the countdown at work. I know they are just being nice and asking but when I hear it over and over I just want to put a post-it on my forehead with the number of days left, that we are having a girl and her name is Kailey.

Even some people are running out of things to talk to me about with my pregnancy but they still find it necessary to talk about it. I had someone tell me today that I look like I have lost weight. I have gained 42lbs. How in the heck do I look like I lost weight? All of my New Years Eve pictures look like I have a double chin and I don't think I will ever print them out... but I look like I lost weight... interesting.

I had tons of people tell me after New Years they were wondering if I had the baby and even had someone walk into my office and say to me "You didn't have the baby yet, huh?" Yes. Yes I did. I decided to take 5 days of leave and even though I gave birth, my stomach is very round and out there.

I think I am more anxious to have the baby just so I can stop answering stupid questions!

11 more days.
